Trimming your mustache – 4 steps
Step #0: Let it grow
We know you know, but this step is still part of a proper step-by-step guide. We don't need to explain much here, except: Keep your hands off the razor, trimmer, or straight razor. If you're having trouble growing a beard or are very impatient and want to stimulate beard growth , read the linked articles first and then come back here.

Step #actuallynostep: Ever been to a barber shop?
This step is of course optional, but if this is your first mustache, you're not sure which shape flatters your face the most, or the result has to be perfect, a barber is your best friend.
Would you rather try it yourself? We totally understand, so we've put together a concise guide with tips from the barber.

Step #1: Shaving
Is your beard at least two centimeters long now? Then we can get started! Grab your beard trimmer or razor and comb or beard brush . First, everything that doesn't belong to the mustache needs to be removed. This is best done with a safety razor or straight razor.
Keep shaving oil or cream and aftershave handy to prevent pimples from leaving behind. You can find more information and tips for the perfect shave in the article on razor burn – and how to avoid it.

It's important to wash your beard with beard shampoo before shaving , and then let it air dry—or blow-dry it if necessary. Never trim your beard when it's wet. The hair simply falls differently when it's wet than when it's dry—and you don't want to leave anything to chance when styling your beard. Leave everything around your mouth—a little too much is better than too little—so you have enough room to maneuver later. Especially if you have a combination of a mustache and a goatee, you should leave enough hair. If you're trimming your mustache in conjunction with your full beard, please read this post about it first.

Step #2: Trim your mustache
Now we'll focus on the beard around your lips. Choose the right trimmer attachment for you – the length depends entirely on the desired style and your preferences. For a twirled beard, you should obviously use a significantly longer trimmer attachment than for a mustache. The motto here is: go longer and then gradually shorten. It helps to brush and/or comb your beard beforehand. This makes it easier for the beard trimmer and you to trim all the hairs to a uniform length.

Step #3: Choose your style
By now, you should have chosen your style. If you're really unsure and can't decide, start with the beard style that has the most hair and sort from there. This way, you can gradually work your way up to different styles.
To do this, remove the trimmer attachment to create precise contours. Our tip: Trim or trim your mustache in layers. This means that the upper beard hairs (closer to the nose) should generally be longer and the ones towards the lips shorter. The trick is to trim both sides evenly. So please take your time here. Mustaches are by no means a quick-cut beard style.

Be especially careful when trimming the hair above the lips. If you're experienced, remove the trimmer attachment and use the bare shaving head instead. If not, put your trimmer aside for a while and grab a pair of scissors. Either use special beard scissors or baby nail scissors. This will prevent you from cutting your lips. Use the scissors (or trimmer) to trim any excess hair.

Step #4: Styling and care
Happy with your beard style? Great! First, wash your face and beard with clean water to remove shaving residue, then dry your beard. We recommend a beard softener to soften your beard hairs and moisturize the skin underneath, which has naturally been stressed by shaving. Alternatively, beard oil is also a good option. Simply massage one to three pumps gently into your beard and do not rinse.

Now it's time to use your beard brush again, followed by beard wax or a stronger beard wax to help your beard maintain its shape. Here, you can either emphasize your shaved beard shape or shape it as desired. Especially with a twirled beard, you shouldn't compromise on styling or skimp on beard wax.

FAQs
Which direction should I trim my beard?
It depends a bit on where you shave. From your earlobes to the top of your ears, we recommend trimming against the direction of hair growth.
The cheeks up to the corners of the mouth - including above the lips - should be brushed in the direction of hair growth.
Then trim everything below the corners of the mouth and the lip in the direction of hair growth. If you have very sensitive skin, shave only in the direction of hair growth at first and test whether going against the direction of hair growth works for your skin. If not, choose a different beard style, because razor burn or pimples aren't worth it.
What are the biggest mistakes when shaving a mustache?
#1: A wet shave! Your hair falls differently when it's wet. Unless you constantly walk around with wet beard hair, you shouldn't cut your hair this way. Since we assume your beard hair will be mostly dry, you should also cut it when it's dry.
#2: Shave from top to bottom, i.e. horizontally! Shave your mustache diagonally from the outside toward the corner of your mouth/crease. This not only looks better, but also more natural. If you're not specifically aiming for a straight upper lip, trim/shave your mustache in a diagonal, slightly rounded curve around your mouth.
#3: Incorrect or lacking care. Both your beard and your facial hair require care. Depending on the texture and needs of your hair, you should choose beard oil, beard softener, or beard and face cream.
#4: Shaved in a hurry. The result: a messy, asymmetrical beard, probably even razor bumps and reddened facial skin. Do us and yourself a favor and take your time!
How long does a mustache have to grow?
This depends on many factors. If you'd like to learn more, the articles "Growing a Beard" and "Accelerating Beard Growth" are helpful.
How do I get a twirled mustache?
First of all: long beard hair. And patience. You need to let your hair grow long enough to have enough hair to twist. This style isn't for everyone, but if you're up for it, go for it! It looks really chic and draws a lot of attention. So it's not for introverts, because you'll definitely get a lot of comments about it!
