What is aftershave?
Aftershaves are specially formulated to soothe, disinfect, and support the skin's regeneration after shaving. They not only help close pores after shaving and soothe skin irritation, but also prevent razor burn and pimples.
Depending on personal preference and skin type, they are available in a wide variety of variations with different textures and compositions. -
How to use aftershave?
Finished shaving? Perfect! Wash your face and neck thoroughly to remove any stubble, shaving cream, and other residue, then pat your face dry with a clean towel. Now it's time for your aftershave: Squeeze a few squirts of aftershave, aftershave lotion, serum, or balm into your palms and gently apply it to the shaved area. It's best to pat liquid formulations in, while massage creamy textures in using circular motions. Even more hygienic (and really practical for large shaving areas) are aftershave sprays, which you spray directly onto the shaved skin without touching or irritating the sensitive skin. -
Is eau de toilette the same as aftershave?
Even though classic aftershaves for men often have an intense fragrance, they are by no means comparable to perfume or eau de toilette. As the name suggests, an aftershave is primarily intended to soothe and disinfect the skin after shaving.
The scent of many aftershave products is more of a side effect and, due to the low perfume oil concentration, doesn't last long. Depending on the formulation, an aftershave contains a maximum of 2-4% perfume oil, while an eau de toilette contains between 5-10%, and an eau de parfum contains up to 20%. For those who prefer a particularly intense fragrance, we recommend the combination of an aftershave and a perfume.

The difference between aftershave balm and lotion
The right aftershave for every skin type: When choosing the perfect aftershave, your skin type plays a crucial role, alongside your personal preferences. Depending on the formulation, aftershaves contain relatively high levels of alcohol or no alcohol at all. While alcohol disinfects the skin, it can also unnecessarily irritate and dry it, especially on sensitive skin.
The classic is aftershave, which has a relatively high alcohol content compared to other forms and contains fragrances that provide the typical masculine scent. While this gives it an antiseptic effect, it can also sting the skin. Sensitive and dry men's skin responds better to aftershave balms because they contain little to no alcohol and nourish and care for the skin with high-quality oils. The texture of aftershave balms is reminiscent (as the name suggests) of a lotion or cream. Aftershave lotions are the happy medium between aftershave and balm: they refresh and care, moisturize, have a low alcohol content, and still have a pleasant scent.

Our Story
Honest men's grooming
When we started the Brooklyn Soap Company in 2012, natural care was still largely living in health food shops. A little eco. A bit "yay". More like something our mums bought. But times have changed. Awareness of natural care has become younger, more urban and yes - more masculine.
